Who doesn’t like pizza? And who doesn’t like FREE pizza? We hope lots of folks will stop by this Thursday evening for FREE PIZZA (& soda) night! Stop by, have some pizza and spend a little time talking comics with us. We’ll even keep the register open that night so that you can pick up your comics while having some pizza. We’ll order up the pizza about 6:30 and we’ll stay open until the last person leaves, whenever that may be. We plan on making FREE PIZZA a monthly event every 2nd Thursday of every month.

Running a bit behind this week so this’ll have to be a short one <<>> The new SUPERMAN event begins in this week’s SUPERMAN: THE LAST STAND OF NEW KRYPTON #1 which is the first chapter in the "Brainiac and The Legion of Super-Heroes” story (actually, the prelude began last week in ADVENTURE #8 – still available). Starting way back in Geoff Johns and Gary Franks "The Lightning Saga," various clues have been planted about a group of Legionnaires undercover in the 21st century. Who are they and why are they here? And what does their mission have to do with the fate of New Krypton? It all comes to a head as Brainiac attacks New Krypton with the intent of returning it to his control. The story runs in all three issues of this series and the next three issues of SUPERMAN, SUPERGIRL and ADVENTURE comics and involves Superman, Supergirl, Superboy and the Legion! <<>> Also from DC this week is JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE RISE AND FALL SPECIAL #1 which spins out of JLA CRY FOR JUSTICE and promises that a shocking secret of Green Arrow is revealed. It all leads into the four part JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE RISE OF ARSENAL story that begins later this month. <<<>>> I was a big fan of the yet to be completed TWELVE maxi series from Marvel, JMS and Chris Weston and I can not wait for the conclusion of the series later this year. But until then I’ll have to be content with this week’s one shot written and drawn by Weston. In it Captain America, on a mission to destroy a Nazi missile camp, meets up with the PHANTOM REPORTER and others characters who would eventually make up the TWELVE. It’s worth a look just for the great Weston art. <<>> This week’s The Waking #1 is the first issue of a four-part miniseries from ZENOSCOPE Entertainment. The series is written and created by Raven Gregory the author of ZENOSCOPE’s Wonderland series and sort of spins out of the popular ZENOSCOPE GRIMM FAIRY TALES series. It’s a crime/horror series about four police detectives who, while investigating two routine murders, discover that the victims of these crimes are coming back from the dead in search of those responsible for taking their lives. So these appear to zombies with purpose! Definitely for zombie fans. <<>> Lots of other good stuff for this week including the newest issue of CRIMINAL, the final issue of the DARK X-MEN mini series, a big bunch of indy titles and books, BATMAN AND ROBIN #10, DAYTRIPPER #4, UNWRITTEN #11, BPRD, a new HELLBOY trade, more IRON MAN II toys and much more! <<>> See ya all this week!
FRED VAN LENTE at FDU, Wednesday, March 10th 6:30pm - 8:00pm
This just in! We received some late info on this so I'm sorry I wasn't able to pass this along sooner. Marvel Comics writer Fred Van Lente will be appearing at FDU in Madison on Wednesday, March 10th from 6:30pm to 8:00pm at the Hartman Lounge in the Mansion building of the university. Van Lente will be discussing his series of comics entitled Action Philosophers and is speaking as part of the 2009/2010 Interrogating Boundaries series of lectures entitled "Artistic Bridges." Van Lente is the author of the American Library Association award winning series ACTION PHILOSOPHERS, as well as New York Times bestsellers Incredible Hercules and Marvel Zombies volumes 3 & 4. Other comics work includes Amazing Spider-man, X-Men Noir, and the very popular Comic Book Comics. Check it out of you can.

Both KEVIN SMITH’S GREEN HORNET #1 and PRELUDE TO DEADPOOL CORPS #1 should be back in stock by this Wednesday. Also back in stock is WOLVERINE WEAPON X #11. I wasn’t able to get anymore PUNISHERMAX BUTTERFLY #1 since that was a MAX title and Marvel doesn’t overprint those books. Also, we were shorted our copies of STARSTRUCK #7 by our distributor and those have been replaced this week and will be in stock on Wednesday. <<>> DC COMICS has announced the final issue of BLACKEST NIGHT, #8, will contain an extra 10 pages of story and art with no additional price increase. BLACKEST NIGHT #8, the now 48 page final issue will arrive Wednesday, March 31th! <<>> And once again, thanks to the folks at MARVEL, FREE this week, while supplies last, is the BLACK WIDOW 2010 promotional postcard published in support of the new BLACK WIDOW series (reserve your copies now) and the forthcoming IRON MAN II movie (in which BW appears). KING OF FLIES HC VOL 01
SUBURBAN HORROR DELINEATED IN A LUSH NOIR STYLE
Set in a suburb that is both nowhere and everywhere, King of the Flies is a glorious bastard, combining the intricacy and subtlety of the best European graphic novels with a hyperdetailed, controlled noir style derived from the finest American cartoonists.
Mezzo and Pirus, previously best known in Europe for a series of cynical, brutal gangster stories, have abandoned their guns and gals for this cycle of suburban stories, but in King of the Flies the violence has just (for the most part) been interiorized.
King of the Flies first appears to be a series of unrelated short stories, each starring (and narrated by) a different protagonist, but it soon becomes obvious that these seemingly disparate episodes weave together to form a single complex narrative, with events that are only glimpsed (or even referred to) revisited from different perspectives - revolving around Eric, a ne'er-do-well, drug-taking teenager at war with his stepfather and, apparently, the whole world. (He is the titular King.)
King of the Flies is designed as a trilogy of albums, which will combine to form a single graphic novel of stunning intricacy and intensity. (Vol. 2, "The Beginning of All Things," will be released by Fantagraphics in the Summer of 2010.)
