THUNDA KING OF CONGO ARCHIVES HC VOL 01
Frank Frazetta (W/A), Gardner Fox (W), and Bob Powell (A)

The late, great Frank Frazetta is widely renowned as one of the greatest fantasy illustrators of all time.

But he didn't hone his skills in study at the fabled galleries of Paris or Milan; his legendary talents flourished as he worked for hire during the Golden Age of comics!

In the early 1950s, Frazetta set up shop at bustling comics publisher Magazine Enterprises, contributing beautiful cover illustrations and comics pages. There, he also created his first mighty adventurer: the lost-world-jungle hero Thun'da!

Though Frazetta left Magazine Enterprises shortly after the first issue of Thun'da was released, and the series was ultimately short lived despite the talented care of collaborators Gardner Fox and Bob Powell, to this day the Thun'da, King of the Congo comics series is held in high regard both as an exciting adventure title and as the only comics series ever to include a cover-to-cover, all-Frazetta issue!

Collecting all six issues of Thun'da, King of the Congo, as well as the Thun'da backup stories that appeared in Cave Girl and Africa: Thrilling Land of Mystery.

Featuring art by golden age greats Frank Frazetta, Gardner Fox, and Bob Powell!

- THE SOAPBOX

NEW COMICS THIS WEEK! This week’s NEW COMIC section of THE SOAPBOX is written by Dewey’s own Chazz Aden who has returned to work for us during the summer after spending his freshman year at the University of Someplace-far-away-in-Pennsylvania (ok, it’s really University of Pittsburg, but I got in trouble calling it Penn State last time, so hopefully this makes up for it a bit). Chazz is a big fan of the recently canceled UNKNOWN SOLDIER series from Vertigo so I asked him to write a little bit about the series for us. New this week is issue 22 of Vertigo’s Unknown Soldier written by Joshua Dysart. This series was recently cancelled by Vertigo, and issue 22 will start the final story arc to conclude the series, which will end in October with issue 25. A beautifully done story, Unknown Soldier captures the complexity of the political and ethnic strife in the Great Lakes region of Africa (the story is set in Northern Uganda and prominently features the issue of the LRA, a guerrilla army waging war in the region). The book is able to faithfully portray all of these real-life issues and problems, while still delivering a good amount of violence and action in each storyline. Sadly, not many people read Unknown Soldier, and that is what led to the cancellation. However, here at Dewey’s we have both volumes of the trades which have been released (“Haunted House” covers issues 1-6, and “Easy Kill” includes 7-14). You can also pick up the new issues of this final arc, “Beautiful World” starting this Wednesday. It may be too late to save this title, but you can still enjoy this remarkable book, which is completely unlike anything else on the shelves. Thanks again Chazz. If you have a favorite series or something to do with comics or the industry that you’d like to talk about or review here you are always welcome to make your feeling known. Just send your comments to the email address in the contact section at the top of the page.

SAN DIEGO COMIC CON NEWS THAT CAUGHT MY ATTENTION: I love SD Comic Con week. Lots of comics news to be had and the comic news site are all a buzz. Here’s some of the news coming out of San Diego that interested me (PS, my thanks to the COMIC BOOK RESOURCES website for most of the quotes here and their fine coverage of Comic Con. Be sure to check them out).
DC released a teaser a poster during the convention that supposedly contained clues to some of the major events coming up from DC over the next year or so. You can find it on most of the news sites and there is a small b&w image in the DC NATION column in the back of last week’s DC books but if you want a closer image to look at we’ll have a full sized poster up at the store beginning this Wednesday so you can see it up close and personal!
The spider-team of writers is no more as Dan Slott takes over the role as sole writer and the book moves to twice a month instead of the current three issues per month. The first new story by Slott is “BIG TIME”. Each issue will feature 30 pages of new material, some of which will occasionally be eight-page backup features. In "Big Time," Parker finds himself on a new, as-yet-revealed career path that promises to showcase "all of the wonderful gifts" he has to offer the world outside of his Spider-Man abilities.
At the Saturday Cup o’ Joe panel, Marvel teased fans with the hint that they would be doing something to do with Crossgen in 2011. After Crossgen entered bankruptcy, Disney bought up its creative properties and since Disney now owns and operates Marvel Comics it only seemed a matter of time before they took advantage of that material. /// Frank Miller will be writing a sequel to his hit Dark Horse graphic novel and the movie 300. The sequel, XERXES, will actually take place at exactly the same time on another battlefield of the same war. Work on a filmed version has already begun.
Now here’s a twist! Marc Guggenheim is starting a new imprint, Collider Entertainment, for comics written by Hollywood scriptwriters without intending them to become movies.
A sequel was announced for Jeffrey Brown’s cult classic giant-robots parody, THE INCREDIBLE CHANGE-BOTS. THE INCREDIBLE CHANGE-BOTS TWO will come out from Top Shelf and feature an amnesiac villain and lots of intentionally disposable new characters. Also, from Top Shelf comes the much anticipated LEAGUES OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN Vol.3: CENTURY #2 1969 from Kevin O’Neill and Alan Moore.
As I’ve said before, “The Rocketeer” is one of my all time favorite characters and probably makes it into my top ten favorite comic series ever (I know, I’ve probably got about 50 top ten items, but hopefully no one is keeping track). At Comic Con it was announced that IDW it will publish a four-issue anthology series of new Rocketeer stories, based on the classic Dave Stevens character. The Rocketeer, published sporadically throughout the 1980s and '90s, told the story of Cliff Secord, a stunt pilot who discovers a jetpack in 1938 Los Angeles. Covers will be painted by Alex Ross, and each issue will include three tales by some of comics' top talent including Mike Allred, Kurt Busiek, John Cassaday, Darwyn Cooke, Michael Golden, Gene Ha, Michael Kaluta, Garry Leach, Bruce Timm, Bill Willingham, and more. "Mike Allred is writing and drawing his, Kurt Busiek is writing a story for Michael Kaluta, John Cassaday and Darwyn Cooke are both writing and drawing their stories," Dunbier said. "There will be some pin-ups by Geoff Darrow, Art Adams, Jeff Campbell, Mike Mignola, a bunch of different guys." This will be required reading for all those who buy their comics at Dewey’s!
For those who love GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (I’m looking at you Bush and Matt), Rocket Raccoon and Groot are getting their own four-issue miniseries this January titled ROCKET RACCOON & GROOT (duh). Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning will be writing it with art from Timothy Green.
Nick Spencer will be writing a Jimmy Olsen co-feature in Action Comics. "Jimmy Olsen's always been one of my favorite characters," Spencer said. His story will be about "what it's like to be a normal guy in the DCU (CBR)." Chloe from "Smallville" will appear in the backup feature as an ongoing character. Also from writer Spencer is the new “Thunder Agents” series with a Frank Quitely cover on issue one and a variant cover by Darwyn Cooke. The series will find several characters at their end of the rope given an opportunity to redeem themselves. The interior artist is CAFU (PS, Thunder Agents is another one of my all time top 10 (50) series ever. Don’t try writing them all down).
2011 marks the 20th anniversary of "Star Wars" at Dark Horse, and there will be eight new series in the year. Most will be revealed at Star Wars Celebration.
DC announced a new title called "Weird Worlds," starring Aaron Lopresti's Garbage Man and other characters. "Monster books, they've become horror books in the last fifteen years, but I want to get back to monsters as superheroes," Lopresti said of the character. There will be two additional leading characters, Sattler said of "Weird Worlds." (via CBR).
Lots of Marvel news out of COMIC CON: Wolverine, Daken and X-23 will form a sort of "Wolverine Universe." And Wolverine: The Best There is" launches in December, written by Charlie Huston with art by Juan Jose Ryp. Rick Remender's Uncanny X-Force will resurrect Apocalypse, which will have ramifications to a number of X-characters. Generation Hope will begin in November which spins out of "Uncanny" and is written by Kieron Gillen. Uncanny" #526 (out this week) will begin the build-up to the new series. The new team on the HULK book is the Atlas team of Jeff Parker and Gabriel Hardman. The team's first story runs from issues #25 to 30 and will be called "Scorched Earth."
According to DC there’ll be a second Flash book next year called 'Flash: Speed Force," Johns said, featuring Bart Allen, Jesse Quick, XS, and the other speedsters. At one of the panels Geoff Johns said "we have a lot of Flash material," adding, "I promise you'll see more of Wally soon, and it won't just be a co-feature."
BOOM STUDIOS announced the first three series of their partnership with Stan Lee. SOLDIER ZERO by writer Paul Cornell and artist Javier Pina will launch in October, followed in November by "The by Mark Waid and Chad Hardin and STARBORN by Chris Roberson and Khary Randolph in December.
Here’s the new line up for the Bat-books: Tony Daniel as writer and artist on Batman, Pete Tomasi and Patrick Gleason on Batman and Robin, Snyder taking over Detective Comics, Cornell as writer on Knight & Squire, Finch as the writer and artist and The Dark Knight. Grant Morrison, after the Batman: The Return one-shot will write a new series titled Batman, Inc. "All I'm going to tell you up front is basically it's almost a team book," explained Morrison (via CBR). "I was looking at the Brave and the Bold cartoon which I love and I wanted to do that kind of thing—Batman with other people. We're come up with a structure that allows us do kind of a team book."
The new Dark Horse Presents, will once again feature Paul Chadwick's Concrete (another one of those top 10 series I was talking about – put down the pen Chazz). "It seemed right to go back to our roots," [publisher Mike] Richardson said, listing more artists like Mike Mignola, Geoff Darrow, and more. Carla Speed McNeil's "Finder" will appear in the anthology first. (via CBR)
In 2011 Fred Van Lente and artist Wellinton Alves will continue the story of Power Man with the five issue miniseries "Power Man & Iron Fist." Other new series from Marvel: LOKI for October by Roberto Sacasa and Sebastian Fiumara; CAPTAIN AMERICA AND THE KORVAK by Ben McCool; "CAPTIAN AMERICA: HAIL HYDRA" in January by Brian Clevinger; CAPTIAN AMERICA: FIGHTING AVENGER, an all ages series retelling his origin and new series; and Mark Waid returning to Captain America with "CAPTIAN AMERICA: MAN OUT OF TIME which is about Captain America’s return and how he reacted to the modern world?" Two new Ultimate series are "Ultimate Thor" in October by Jonathan Hickman and Carlos Pacheco and "Ultimate Doom" in December by Brian Michael Bendis, completing his "Ultimate Enemy" trilogy.
There’ll be some changes in the Archie digest coming up with the return of The World of Archie Double Digest and the launch of an Archie and Friends Double Digest (which will replace the Archie Pals 'n' Gals Digest) and Betty & Veronica and Friends Double Digest.
At the Eisner Awards ceremony Denis Kitchen announced that Will Eisner's A Contract with God is coming to the silver screen. I’m not a movie guy (I’ll take a good comic over a movie any day) but after the mess that Frank Miller made of THE SPIRIT in that ill conceived mess of a movie, I’m hopeful that this movie will give Eisner another chance for wide spread appreciation of the comic and creative genius that he was.
As a special tie-in to the San Diego Comic Con this week we've brought in copies of the first two music CDs from Kirby Krackle, the self described "nerd band" of comic fans that often play at San Diego and other comic conventions throughout the land.
I spent way too much time on this section this week. Expect babble & hype to return next time.
